Current Trustees

Frank JacksonFrank Jackson
Eastern Region

President of EAPGS

Hi, to anyone who is thinking about joining the EAPGS do it.  There are a lot of new friends here that you just have not met yet, along with a wealth of knowledge about pattern glass.  The members of our group are from all over the country, and are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet.

To the current members, I believe that we need to expand our numbers, and the popularity of Pattern Glass.  The way to do this is to expose more people to Pattern Glass.  We have to find ways and places to display our glass, so that more people come to love Pattern Glass, and enjoy it as we do.

About me I live in Bordentown New Jersey and I will be getting out of Prison soon.  I work there, I will be retiring.  I have been collecting pattern glass for about 20 years.  I first came across a Westward ho creamer at an auction.  It was not like anything I had seen before; I loved the dogs head on the handle.  It went home with me.  I went to the book store, and found a book on Pattern Glass, and found out a lot more about the glass and all of the patterns out there.  I have collections of Westward Ho, Frosted Lion, Three Faces, Actress, and other pieces.

Term expires in April of 2012.

Vice-President of EAPGS

I am serving for a second time as a Trustee of the EAPGS, and continue to be as excited about our role in promoting the love of pattern glass as I was when Bill and Jo first proposed their idea for such an organization.  I see the goals of the Board, and of our Society, as continuing to promote and encourage educational opportunities, as I firmly believe that knowledge enhances a collector's enjoyment and enthusiasm for EAPG.

I feel strongly that our annual meeting should continue the practice of lectures and educational displays.  Pattern identification through our website is also a valuable connection with potential new members.  I strongly endorse local and regional area meetings, as a way of continuing to connect our membership to each other as well as reaching out to potential new members.

I received my first piece of pattern glass, a compote in Adams' PLUME pattern, as a High School graduation gift from my parents and have gone on to avidly collect that and several other patterns, including HOLLY, BEADED GRAPE MEDALLION, and WHEAT IN SHIELD.  I also have a large collection of sets of flint goblets and champagnes, as well as flint bar-lip decanters.

I have been a pattern glass dealer since 1981, and lecture frequently on pattern glass.   Through my business Antiques on Tour, I lead annual tours with emphasis on history and antique shopping, giving me lots of opportunity to expose these travelers to early pattern glass.  Several have become dedicated pattern glass collectors!!!

Term expires in April of 2013.

My husband Ray and I live in Manchester, Missouri where we share our home with our many collections including my EAPG and his American Art Pottery.  We both enjoy auctions, antique shows and shops and any other venue that offers an opportunity to pursue the “hunt”.

Several years ago I joined the EAPG Society and have been very happy to be a part of this enthusiastic group.  Sometimes collecting can be a rather solitary endeavor and I’ve been pleased to find that a group sharing varied but similar interests adds an exciting dimension to the experience.  The wealth of knowledge possessed by the members of this group is amazing and so is their generosity in sharing that information for the enjoyment of all.

Since we act as caretakers of the glass and its history, we should strive to learn as much as possible.  The National and Regional meetings provide many educational opportunities through seminars, guest speakers, question and answer sessions, pattern identification and other activities.  I appreciate that the Society recognizes the importance of coordinating the National meeting with a good glass show as a way for us to show our support and recognition of how important informed dealers are to our field.  The fabulous glass the dealers displayed at the 2011 Mega Convention demonstrated the benefits of that practice.

Being a member of the Society has been meaningful to me and I am pleased to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees.

I have had a nearly life-long interest in pattern glass.  I started to collect milk glass in the early 1960's, then started to collect Greentown glass a few years later.  Greentown glass is my major collecting interest, which resulted in my election as National Greentown Glass President in the late 1980's.  I also collect historical glass, slag glass of various colors, Iowa City glass, Wavecrest, feather pattern, beveled star by Model Flint, yutec by McKee, and have an interest in all American glass, especially colored glass from about 1860 to 1920.  My wife, Alice, and I have sold antiques on a modest scale since 1970, with emphasis on American glass.  The collections and the antique market are part of my broader interest in all forms of history.  I taught U.S. history in Iowa schools for 38 years, but am currently retired, ready to serve the broader interest of the pattern glass collecting community.  I am interested in glass research, and am especially interested in broadening the interest in and appeal of pattern glass collecting.  Thanks to all who elected me to the Board of Trustees.  If I can be of further service to you, please contact me.  I am interested in further communication with EAPGS members.

About 20 years ago, my husband and I started looking for clear Wild Flower pattern as Christmas presents for our Grandparents. Then we discovered it came in colors and started collecting for ourselves. We moved on to Thousand Eye, Frosted Dolphin, and Iowa City Glass.

As I learn about a new pattern that has caught my eye, my collection soon includes that pattern also. My friend, Lee Briggeman, has taught me a lot about EAPG and is responsible for introducing me to many new patterns. Now I collect all kinds of patterns: children’s pieces, pieces with animals, interesting patterns, and fun finials.

When I hold a piece of EAPG, I can imagine the workmanship and pride the maker had when he made that piece. EAPG has such interesting character, something that today’s glass lacks. We’ve always been in to antiques, so getting display cabinets for the glass has added to our enjoyment of collecting. I also have Fostoria and Heisey, so you could say I’m a glass nut.

My wife (Sandra) and I have collected “Bellflower” pattern pressed glass for over thirty years.

During this time there arose gradually a desire to learn about the evolution of the pressing process, the identity and manufacturers of the numerous flint and non-flint patterns (particularly those of the last three quarters of the 19th century), as well as to meet other collectors and become acquainted with their collecting interest. For these reasons, we joined EAPGS. We found a congenial and collegial group of people who enthusiastically shared their expertise and information. Because of this experience, I am pleased to serve as a Trustee and by this means do more to strengthen the Society for the benefit of our membership.

While collecting “Bellflower”, I was an academician and, thereby, acquired a keen sense of curiosity. This recently led me to begin a study of “Bellflower” base pattern differences and has resulted in a publication describing such differences observed on single-vine forms. My current plans include similar articles with regards to double-vine and cut “Bellflower” varieties. I anticipate that this will lead to conclusion about design styles, which can be attributed to different mid 19th century manufacturers.

Dan Jensen and his wife Carolyn have been collectors for many years and are interested in ceramics as well as EAPG. Dan has served two terms as a member of the Board of Trustees and as treasurer and president. “The Early American Pattern Glass Society is one of the friendliest and welcoming organizations Carolyn and I have had the pleasure to join. We have made many new friends who have been generous in sharing their knowledge about EAPG and giving us advice about building our collection of American flint glass. As an officer and member of the Board during the past several years, I know how hard the trustees and the many volunteers who support the Society have worked to strengthen the organization and enhance the experience it provides for all our members.”

I am a native of the Pittsburgh area and retired from ‘two tours of duty’ within the banking industry sandwiched around a venture into entrepreneurship in establishing a successful advertising agency.  All of this I truly loved and believe it or not still miss every once in a while.

After starting to collect pattern glass about eight years prior I joined the EAPG Society in 1994 or 1995.  What really sparked my interest was that during that time was when I had the advertising agency located in the south side of Pittsburgh.  This area was home to many of the old glass companies with some of their original buildings within a couple blocks of our offices.

The ‘hunt’ and the infrequent ‘thrill of victory’ still provide me with my greatest thrill!  My EAPG collection focuses primarily on historical and figural with some English and other unique pieces also finding a home.  Additionally, I also collect vintage fountain pens and pencils, Victorian pocket Bibles and autograph books from the 1800’s.  These I find particularly interesting because of the beautiful penmanship and verse.

I look forward to joining the other trustees of the EAPGS, utilizing the firm foundation of our organization that has been previously established, and developing strategies that will meet the ever-changing dynamics of the collecting world in serving our members.

I and Larry have lived our entire lives in Iowa.  We were fortunate to be raised in families that kept and treasured pattern glass.  Our collection includes many family heirlooms as well as collected pieces.  I was raised in Washington County Iowa where in Keota Iowa the Eagle Glass Factory, 1879-1880, was started by James Leighton.  The Eagle Glass Factory was the first glass factory west of the Mississippi River to produce pattern glass.  When the Eagle Glass Factory failed Leighton built the Iowa City Flint Glass Factory, 1880-1882.

At age 16 my Grandmother gave me three Eagle Glass beer goblets.  She said they are not very pretty and of poor quality glass but I should keep them because it was part of my heritage.  After our marriage in 1962 I seriously started collecting flint glass.  Our collection includes Bellflower, Ashburton, Excelisor, Thumbprint, Lion, Westward Ho, cup plates, goblets and early lacy flint.  We have an extensive collection of Keota Eagle Glass and Iowa City Glass.

For years we had been looking for a group who shared our love of pattern glass.  Four years ago we joined EAPGS and it’s been a wonderful experience.  I encourage anyone who has 1 piece or a collection and wants to learn about old pattern glassware to join.  EAPGS members are friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and passionate about preserving the history of pattern glass. I am honored to be a Trustee of this great society.
